Reflections

When Juliette has a domestic servant beaten for pursuing a young man above her station, she finds herself cursed by a witch to live in a world behind her own mirror. She is unable to leave except on the first night of a full moon.
Juliette is forced to seek what food and shelter the new world provides with the help of a unicorn, a man who is half bear, and a centaur. Together they struggle to survive against lions, wolves, and the challenges of watching their friends live and die through the back of the mirror, as their own world moves on without them.

Reflections begins in Regency-era London, and ends in Clover Springs, California, an all but abandoned Gold Rush town.

What a wonderful tale, skillfully woven by Jena Baxter. Reflections is a story about a young, priveledged, spoiled girl that becomes cursed for her unkind deeds. I love the unique twist with the mirror. Quite magical indeed.

Juliette and Emily were best friends until Juliette's mother punished her for playing with a child that would soon be one of their servants and years later Juliette has Emily beaten in a jealous rage over a boy named Jonathan. When Emily's Aunt finds out, she curses Juliette to live in a world she created behind a mirror.

Juliette has no survival skills but manages to get by with the help of a beran ( a bear-man), unicorn, and centaur. The summers are hot and long and the winters are icy cold, and sometimes they are threatened by lions and wolves, as well as by men on the one night of the month Juliette and Tolor, the beran, are able to leave their prison for a short time.

The theme of what friendship is about abounds in this story as well as to treat others like you want to be treated. Karma is huge throughout.

I loved the strong emotional scenes (sharing them would equal spoilers) and also the comedic element. What I loved the most is feeling like I was sharing in the bond of love and friendship. There is even an old fashioned song scene in the mix.

Reflections is a story you don't want to miss.
